Overview

Adashino Nenbutsuji is a relatively unknown temple known as a hidden gem where visitors can find a small but beautiful bamboo forest without the crowds usually found in Arashiyama's Bamboo Grove. It's sometimes referred to by tourists as 'the temple with the secret bamboo grove', with a picturesque bamboo grove that's perfect for photos.

Adashino is 1200 years old (est. 811) and features over 8000 ancient stone statues. The temple was founded by a priest who wanted to create a sanctuary for 'lonely souls' - people who had passed away without any family to take care of their tombstones. Over the centuries, thousands of these tombstone statues were collected, providing them peace inside the temple grounds.
