The Best Ryokans In Kyoto To Suit All Budgets

An expert analysis based on customer reviews and knowledge of Kyoto
The Nazuna Ryokan in Kyoto
The Nazuna Kyoto

Overview

Ryokans are perfect for those looking for an authentic Japanese experience. The typical definition of a Ryokan is a Japanese-style guesthouse, usually including an onsen, tatami floors, and shoji screen doors, with a strong focus on traditional Japanese hospitality. They are sought after because they provide a more historical experience and offer more cultural immersion than modern hotels. But choosing the right accommodation can be a very time-consuming process. How can you be sure it will be worth the price? How do you know which location to choose? And how can you trust the recommendations on other websites? We aim to solve all these problems and save you time.

Our Expertise

After working as a tour guide in Kyoto for over 3 years, I decided to compile this list based on my expert knowledge of this incredible city. On top of this knowledge, I've analyzed thousands of customer reviews to determine an accurate list of the best ryokans in Kyoto. Unlike other websites, this is not a generic article with a top ten list, instead of providing a subjective opinion full of sponsored content and Google Ads, this article gives you measurable data and metrics.

The only filters I've personally applied are:

- a minimum average review rating of 8.5 out of 10

- the location must be convenient for sightseeing

- a minimum of 100 reviews

- must have decent photos (visuals are key)

Our listing for each place has a convenient summary including the:

  • Gallery

  • Description

  • Highlights

  • Average Price (incl. peak and offpeak)

  • Location

2. The Gion Kyoka Ryokan

The Gion Kyoka Ryokan is a very authentic Japanese experience, so much so that it's not even labelled in English on booking.com, instead, it's labelled in kanji as 祇園の宿杏花. This ryokan is famous for its traditional atmosphere, historical ambience, and outstanding hospitality. It combines these charming nostalgic elements with modern-day comforts such as a luxurious Western-style mattress, and exquisitely prepared Kyoto cuisine. This 100-year-old building was originally a teahouse and is located right in the heart of Gion, surrounded by historically preserved streets, and just a 2-minute walk to the Kamogawa or a 4-minute walk to the Yasaka Shrine.

"We were absolutely ecstatic with our stay here! The ryokan had the charm of historical Japan, but is modernized and impeccable in every way. We were surprised with how large our accommodations were with a tatami tea room, a compact yet efficient kitchen, beautiful onsen bath and a spacious bedroom... all with a gorgeous view of our own little zen garden. Loved the smell of the cedar hardwood that permeated the space. We will always remember our stay here for the Kyoto experience we always dreamed of."

"This is such a gorgeous little place down a side street in Kyoto. Whilst it's very accessible via train (one stop from Kyoto main station), it's in a quiet street and you feel like you're in an oasis. The rooms are beautifully maintained, and the hosts are amazing. So may little touches, like how they make your room each day to the amazing breakfast they make for you. It really has the vibe of being an old school Bed and Breakfast with a Japanese twist. I couldn't recommend this place more."
